I’m very jealous that I’m not on that road trip with you. I did something similar when I drove alone to Florida from New Jersey when I was 19 and then went cross country with a friend as planned. We even dipped down to Acapulco before settling in California for a bit. I really miss rambling, but sadly 78 is not the new 19, much as I still feel that age inside. Enjoy every moment of your getaway!

Hi, Old Man, you and your wife enjoy your trip. I will disagree with one comment " Part of Southern culture is to be charming and welcoming, and that remains strong".

From 2006 to 2019 I traveled for business, extensively from the 'mid-west' to up and down the East Coast. The friendliest and most welcoming people I met were in Washington, DC (the permanent residents) and Rhode Island. The least friendly and downright rude were in South Carolina. Of course, I am from California, which apparently is anathema, to the south. Minnesotans were the other friendliest people. I have relatives in Texas so they were welcoming; but my co-workers, except those I knew in California, were not very welcoming either.

I am usually a very friendly person on the surface, which for a loner is as good as it gets.

If you visit Charleston, there is so much to see. Same in Atlanta. Culture and a sense of place are distinctly local in the South, IMHO. If you want to blow your wad on a charming French-Spanish restaurant, I recommend Chez Nous in Charleston. My son is a sous chef there.
